The Jim Kuhn Leadership Award winner for 2013 is Harry Cline, former editor of Western Farm Press, sister publication of Hay & Forage Grower.

Robert Ferguson, chairman of the California Alfalfa & Forage Association (CAFA), announced the award Thursday at the Western Alfalfa & Forage Symposium, in Reno, NV.

"Harry Cline carried on his family's agricultural tradition by writing about agriculture in a journalism career that has spanned more than 50 years," Ferguson said. "He has written thousands of articles about alfalfa."

Cline formed a partnership between his publication and CAFA, offering the association monthly column space and online exposure, he added.

"Harry was also the creator and director of Farm Press University, the online educational division of Farm Press-Penton Media that now provides more than 20 online continuing education courses.

"In his Western Farm Press editorials, Harry has been a strong proponent and a voice of common sense for the bioengineered technology for crop improvement. He reports sound scientific information on the changes that are occurring in modern agriculture and the real challenges it faces in feeding the future's growing population.

"Perhaps Harry's career can best be summed up by a few comments from a genetleman like Jesse Richardson, Western Society of Weed Science past president and CAFA board member: 'His journalistic integrity and determination to ensure that credible science wins out over politics and activism is very much appreciated, because scientists ofen do a poor job of defending themselves against their critics.' "

The award is presented by CAFA each year in honor of Jim Kuhn, a forage industry icon and innovator, who was killed in a vehicle accident near his El Centro, CA.
