Southern China Dairies May Seek U.S. Alfalfa

Southern China's robust economy is boosting demand for dairy products among the country's increasingly affluent and health-conscious consumers. And that may be a marketing opportunity for U.S. growers, reports The Pacific Northwest Dairy Monitor, a University of Idaho Extension Service publication. The Chinese region's dairy industry is expanding to try to meet demand, but favorable import tariffs are making it receptive to import more U.S. alfalfa. The National Hay Association and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) have worked to build this market. A recent FAS report indicates that there is little competition from other countries. For more about exporting hay to China, check the report at www.fas.usda.gov/info/fasworldwide/2007/09-2007/ChinaAlfalfaMarket.pdf.
