The 30th-annual Smith County Hay Show will be held Sept. 23 as part of the Sept. 19-29 East Texas State Fair.

Hay growers interested in participating must submit samples to one of eight locations in the county either Aug. 14 or Aug. 15. The entry fee is just $3 per hay sample.

Hay grown in Smith County, or grown by producers who live in Smith County, is eligible for the contest.

The show receives 100-125 entries each year. Samples are analyzed at the Texas A&M University Hay Testing Lab.

Top-scoring bales will be auctioned off during the annual Howdy Neighbor Barbecue, held at the Harvey Convention Center, also on Sept. 23. Proceeds from the sale benefit youth programs, conservation activities and scholarships.
