Agriculture officials in South Dakota are encouraging ranchers in the state’s western counties, devastated by an early October 2013 blizzard, to apply for donated hay bales.

All producers in disaster-declared areas are eligible to apply. The South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) will select recipients based on the number of applications received, the amount of hay available and need. Those receiving hay will be responsible for arranging transportation and associated costs.

Download an application here. The deadline for applying is March 21.

South Dakota ranchers lost an estimated 43,000 cattle and other livestock in the blizzard.
