Cow Numbers, Milk Production, Higher Than Last Year's

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.28 million head in April, 39,000 more than in April 2006, but 6,000 head less than in March 2007. Production per cow was 1,745 lbs, 19 lbs above the April 2006 figure.

Idaho gained 25,000 cows during the 12-month period. Texas gained 14,000 cows; California, 13,000; Arizona and Michigan, 10,000 each; and Wisconsin, 5,000. Cow numbers dropped by 17,000 in New York, 8,000 in Oregon and in Kentucky, and 5,000 in New Mexico.
