Preservative May Aid Wet Distillers' Grain

Treating wet distillers' grain with a preservative improved intake but not milk production in a South Dakota State University experiment.

The trial compared dry distillers' grain, untreated wet distillers' grain and wet distillers' grain treated with a preservative (CakeGuard). Each was fed as 15% of the diet.

Dry matter losses from spoilage were the same for all three diets. Feed efficiency tended to be greater for the wet distillers' grain diets vs. the dry distillers' grain diet.

As the study progressed, dry matter intake decreased in cows fed untreated wet distillers' grain, but increased in cows fed dry distillers' grain and preservative-treated wet distillers' grain. However, milk production, milk fat and protein production, body condition score and body weight were the same for all three diets.
