U.S. hay prices continued to push upward in April, according to USDA’s Agricultural Prices report released last week.
The $190/ton average price received by farmers for all hay last month was up $9 from that of the previous month. In April 2011, the all-hay price was $143/ton.
The average alfalfa price in April, at $207/ton, was up $6/ton from the March figure and $46/ton higher than the average price in April of 2011. Among the 27 reporting states, New Mexico reported the highest alfalfa price, $300/ton. That’s down $1/ton from the previous month. North Dakota had the lowest average alfalfa price at $75/ton, down $3/ton from the price reported in March 2012.
