U.S. hay prices pushed upward in October, according to USDA’s monthly Agricultural Prices report issued last week.

The $193/ton average all-hay price received by farmers last month was up $6 from the previous month’s figure. Last year, the average price in October was $185/ton.

The preliminary average alfalfa price in October, at $212/ton, was up $7/ton from September’s average price and $8/ton higher than the October 2011 average price.

Among the 27 reporting states, Ohio registered the highest alfalfa price in October, at $256/ton, up $35/ton from its September high and $75/ton more than the price reported in October 2011. North Dakota had the lowest average price – $141/ton – up $10 from the previous month’s average price and $73 higher than the price reported in October 2012.
