U.S. all-hay prices dropped by $5/ton in January compared to prices of the month before, according to a USDA Agricultural Prices report released last week.
The average price received by farmers for all hay in January was estimated at $172/ton. In comparison, the previous January’s all-hay price averaged $112/ton.
The U.S. alfalfa-hay price in January averaged $192/ton and was down $7/ton from the December 2011 price. But it was up $71/ton from the average price in January 2011. Among the 27 reporting states, New York saw the largest increase – $24/ton – between December and January. The largest month-to-month drop in price – $14/ton – was in South Dakota.
