Dry Distillers Grains Raise Digestibility, Feed Intake
Feeding a dry distillers grains supplement with smooth bromegrass increased total dry matter digestibility and feed intake, according to Iowa State University researchers.
Peter Lasley and James Russell fed smooth bromegrass hay with dry distillers grains to three steers in metabolism stalls. Steers were fed distillers at 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5% body weight, resulting in total dry matter intakes of 9.3, 11.6, 12.8 and 15.7 lbs/day, respectively.
Dry matter digestibility was 54.9, 63.6, 65.8 and 67, respectively, with average total digestible dry matter of 1.7 as a percent of body weight, which didn't differ significantly over treatments.
