With new crop hay being harvested throughout the region, auctioneer Wayne Kruse of Centennial Livestock Auctions in Fort Collins, Colo., reports demand for hay is not particularly high. He adds this is not uncommon for this time of year. “Top-quality alfalfa sold for $150 to $200 per ton on Saturday (June 27),” says Kruse. He added that most of the higher prices were for smaller lots. Kruse says there is still plenty of lower quality 2014 hay available but there is very little demand. That vintage of hay is selling for $50 to $75 per ton. Kruse noted that a lot of the larger dairies are finding alfalfa from outside the area at reasonable prices. He sees prices for average-quality alfalfa settling at $100 to $125 per ton in the short run. Conditions for making hay have improved recently in the Fort Collins area, which will further contribute to adequate supplies.
