Video: How To Lower Silage Losses

RSS

Make sure your silage feedout rate and silo or pile design work together – that’s how to reduce dry matter losses and spoilage, say silage experts. In the accompanying video, Noelia Silva-del Rio, farm advisor for Cooperative Extension Tulare County in California, says producers in her state need to feed off the entire faces of silos or piles. Most only shave a third to half of silage faces each day, she says.

Brian Holmes, a University of Wisconsin ag engineer, advocates designing silage storage so the crop is fed at a 1’/day rate. To read more of his suggestions, see “Faster Feedout Can Reduce Spoilage, Expert Says.”
