Western Forage Challenge Winners Announced

Nine Western hay growers were awarded cash prizes for their winning entries in the 2012 World Ag Expo Forage Challenge, announced at the first day of the expo, Feb. 14, in Tulare, CA.

Phil Troost of Springs Dairy in Lake Arthur, NM, took first place in the alfalfa category of the 2012 World Ag Expo Forage Challenge. Winners were announced during last week’s expo in Tulare, CA.

Greg Nunes of Nunes Farms in Modesto, CA, registered a second-place win in the category, while David Hinman of Hardrock Farms in Wheatland, WY, notched the third-place award.

Photos of the alfalfa category winners, along with those of the top three finishers in the contest’s BMR and traditional corn silage categories, have been posted on hayandforage.com.

The Forage Challenge is open to farmers and ranchers from 11 Western states. This year’s contest drew 77 entries. First-place winners in each of the three categories received $3,000. Second-place category winners were awarded $2,000 each, while third-place winners each received $1,000. The Forage Challenge was presented by Mycogen Seeds; the contest's awards and prizes were sponsored by Lallemand Animal Nutrition North America.
