Western growers of alfalfa hay, standard corn silage or brown midrib (BMR) corn silage have until Dec. 13 to submit samples for the 2013 World Ag Expo Forage Challenge.
Cash prizes of up to $18,000 will be awarded based on forage-lab analyses and a visual evaluation of entries by dairy nutrition and forage production experts. The contest is presented by Mycogen Seeds and the awards are from Lallemand Animal Nutrition.
“With grain prices on the rise, high-quality forages are more important than ever for dairy producers,” says Greg Cannon, Mycogen Seeds forage portfolio marketing leader. “This program focuses attention on the role of high-quality forages in reducing overall feed costs.”
Samples of standard corn silage, BMR corn silage and alfalfa hay grown in 2012 can be submitted to the University of California, Davis, which helps administer the contest and tests hay samples. Corn silage entries are tested by Cumberland Valley Analytical Services, Hagerstown, MD.
Cost to enter the contest is $25 per entry. Visit bit.ly/r5Ohsz for entry forms and full contest rules. Winners will be announced Feb. 12, 2013, at World Ag Expo in Tulare, CA.
