• Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.7 million head on Dec. 1, according to USDA’s Cattle on Feed report. This was down 2% year-over-year.

• Alfalfa hay exports to all U.S. trading partners totaled 129,945 metric tons (MT) in September. That number was relatively stable month-over-month but 22% less compared to the same period last year.

• China imported 55,625 MT of U.S. alfalfa hay in September, which was 16% less than the previous month. The other major alfalfa hay customers were Japan with 25,426 MT and Saudi Arabia with 15,915 MT.

• All other hay (mostly grass) exports totaled 69,702 MT. Japan was the largest consumer of U.S. grass hay in September with 39,382 MT, followed by South Korea with 17,700 MT and Taiwan with 4,610 MT.
