Alfalfa, grass and corn silage harvesting strategies and storage methods will be among topics explored during the Forage Seminars at World Dairy Expo. They will be held at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., from Oct. 2 through Oct. 5, in the Arena Building at the Alliant Energy Center, Madison, WI.
On Oct. 2, Dan Undersander takes the stage discussing the differences in making alfalfa and grass silage in the morning and, in the afternoon, reducing heat damage in hay and haylage. He’s the University of Wisconsin (UW) Extension forage specialist.
On Oct 3, Rick Grant, Miner Institute president, will tell how to maximize the use of forage fiber analyses at 10 a.m. Neal Martin, recently retired director of the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center (USDFRC), will talk on improved forage-testing options in the afternoon.
On Oct. 4, Richard Muck, USDFRC ag engineer, will tell what’s new with plastic covers and silage density in the morning. At 1:30 p.m., Wayne Coblentz will discuss preserving hay using propionic acid. Coblentz, also with the USDFRC, is a dairy scientist and agronomist.
At 10 a.m., Oct. 5, a presentation on corn silage yield drivers and profit robbers will be made by UW Extension corn agronomist Joe Lauer.
