Several growers were once again in the winners’ circle at the recent Ozark Empire Fair Hay Show in Springfield, MO.

Glenn and Toni Obermann, of Monett, MO, captured top honors in the contest with an entry of third-cutting alfalfa. The entry registered 183 relative feed value (RFV), with 22% crude protein and 66.1% total digestible nutrients. The win marks the Obermanns' third OEF championship in the last four years.

John Staiger, Billings, MO, was the reserve champion winner. Staiger’s alfalfa-orchardgrass entry, with a 135 RFV, scored 39 out of 40 possible points in the subjective evaluation portion of the judging. The subjective score, based on color, aroma, purity, shape and condition, accounts for 40% of the final placing. The balance of the scoring is based on a lab analysis. Since 1985, Staiger has notched champion hay honors in the show four times.

The hay show is a joint educational effort of the Ozark Empire Fair, Custom Lab, Golden City and University of Missouri Extension. See a complete listing of hay show results.
