Funding is being requested for The Billy and Lois Melton Endowed Professorship at New Mexico State University’s department of plant and environmental sciences.

It supports graduate and undergraduate student training and research dedicated to permanent plant breeding, genetics and drought-tolerant alfalfa research. The endowment has a target goal of $250,000.

It honors Billy Melton, who taught at NMSU, trained many commercial alfalfa breeders and developed six alfalfa varieties, including the first to thrive under New Mexico’s limited rainfall.
