New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez signed legislation last week allowing oversized hay loads to be transported on state roads.

Prior to the new law, transport of oversized hay loads was allowed only on national highways within the state. Under the new legislation, special permits will be issued for transport along state roads as well.

Sponsors say the measure will help livestock producers deal with the effects of a prolonged drought; rangeland conditions deteriorated in many parts of the state and sent hay prices soaring the past year.
