Extension services in drought-stressed areas have been busy offering management strategies in workshops for forage and livestock producers.
Two such events include the second day of the Aug. 14-15 Nebraska Grazing Conference and the Sept. 6 Purdue Forage Management Workshop.
The Nebraska conference, held at the Kearney Holiday Inn Hotel and Convention Center, Kearney, will include sessions on managing drought risk, writing a drought plan and evaluating grazing options from mid-morning until mid-afternoon on Aug. 15.
The Sept. 6 Purdue workshop will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Purdue Agronomy Center for Research and Education in West Lafayette. Sessions will cover seeding emergency crops, alternative livestock feeds, double-crop forages and silage. A variety of management practices for droughty pastures, alternative feeds, damaged forage stands and soil cover will be suggested.
