The deadline for Western growers to enter the 2013 World Ag Expo Forage Challenge has been extended to Dec. 19, says Dan Putnam, University of California Extension forage specialist and one of the organizers.

Contest categories include alfalfa hay, standard corn silage and brown midrib corn silage. Winners will receive cash prizes totaling more than $18,000; they will be announced Feb. 12 at World Ag Expo in Tulare, CA.

Entries will be judged according to forage lab analyses and visual evaluations conducted by dairy nutrition and forage production experts. The University of California Davis will test hay samples, while Cumberland Valley Analytical Services, Hagerstown, MD, will test corn silage entries. There is a $25/sample entry fee. Download the entry form and rules here.
